The Newry Herd has beaten off stiff competition from the other six UK Regional winners to win the UK Premier Pedigree Herd Award, announced at the recent EDFE in Stoneleigth. The Newry Herd is also the current holder of the Northern Ireland Holstein Breeders club, (Medium Herd) on twice daily milking production award.
The herd is made up of 110 cows with an average yield of 10,586 kg at 3.94% fat and 3.1% protein. This production is achieved on a simple system of parlour feeding and midday feed. In the winter the herd is fed on McLarnon Butter-Yield Nuts in the parlour and McLarnons Elite Blend in the silage passage at midday.

The herd has an average classification score of 88 points, including 18 heifers, with 39 cows classified Excellent. A key feature of the herd is the number of cows in the herd that have achieved multiple EX classifications as result of Jim's policy of breeding cows for longevity. The Barbie cow family is going from strength to strength in the Newry Herd.
